The October issue of Best Life hit newsstands yesterday, and it's perfection. Ed Burns graces the cover in well-dressed, bad-ass form and the design and content is sharp as ever. But this is also the first issue that I have published work!
My first assignment at Best Life is published here. It was an advice piece called "How can I tell if the prescription meds I buy online are legit?" Although the piece is only 350 words long, it took a heck of a lot of work. That's what's fascinating about working at a magazine - you have no clue how much work goes into the tiniest pieces until you do it. It gave me a whole new persepective on magazines. The piece was a blast to write; I found that I really enjoy writing about health.
The other page I'm posting includes a sidebar I did called "How We Keep It Alive." It appears on the Relationships page and includes quotes from real couples on how they keep their marriage stimulating. The sidebar usually gravitates toward sexual information, but the people I was instructed to interview (my friends' parents!) were just a bit reluctant to give me that information.
However, all turned out quite well. My friend Ricky who works at my dad's company was a perfect lead for a quote, as he has one of the happiest marriages I've ever heard of, as well was my best friend Michelle's mom, Terry, who was glad to help me out and talk about her happy marriage to Marc. The sidebar turned out rather sweet and I'm proud of it. And the non-related illustrations above the sidebar add an ironic humor to it.
Also, check out the profile piece on Ed Burns, which is a fantastic piece with incredible photos. The photoshoot took place on the day that the gas pipe exploded at 41st and Lexington (which I avoided by a twist of fate). Unfortunately, the photos aren't online, but they're worth picking up the print copy of the magazine.

That quote from the Mogaveros is so sweet! The other day I was bored at work and I picked up a Best Life just to look at your name in the masthead, haha.
"Have you seen my magazine?"
The first panel of that cartoon is the best. I highly recommend you try it.
